Camels in the North Valley 1860's
Three men thought it a good idea to bring camels in as pack animals for the gold rush. Sounded good in the beginning...tough critters, less water use, packs more than a mule. They didn't realize that their feet are built for sand not rough, rocky terrain, they smell terrible, are quite aggresive, and basically offend man and beast alike with their nature. It was the end of the camel pack train after a gent threatened to shoot one of them for scaring his horses and causing far more than their fair share of trouble on the Cariboo Trail.
